Horseshoe Bend National Military Park
The Colorado River is perhaps the most important watercourse in the US state of Alabama and the entire American Southwest. It drains an area of 240,000 square miles. The river has slowly made its way across vast layers of sandstone over several million years, creating a deep canyon. This canyon then continues to the Grand Canyon National Park area.
At some point, however, the river hit an impenetrable sandstone core and its flow was diverted. This created a unique horseshoe-shaped bend, now called Horseshoe Bend. This unique meander is not part of any national park, so it is not very well known. Tourists can take the dirt road to the edge of the abyss and enjoy the magnificent views of the green waters of the Colorado River, which is most beautiful in the morning.
The abyss has unique dimensions and huge depth, so when you stand on its edge, you will feel really tiny. Down on the shores of Colorado, you can watch the rubber rafts that stop on the sandy beaches so that people can relax and enjoy the surrounding beauty. Rafts sail from the nearby Glen Canyon Dam. So if you go to Horseshoe Bend, don’t forget to be equipped with binoculars and a good camera that can take panoramic pictures. Few people can manage the dimensions of this fold in one photo.
There is an interesting canyon near Horseshoe Bend, which was excavated in red sandstone rock by torrential rain. It was named Antelope Canyon, but when you visit it you have to reckon with the influx of curious tourists, it can happen that it will take up to 2 hours before you get inside.
