California is the richest, most populous, and most economically active federal state in the United States. California is also the third largest U.S. state after Alaska and Texas, bordering Oregon, Nevada, Arizona and Mexico. To the west, the shores of California are washed by the Pacific Ocean. The landscape is full of contrasts, there are high mountain ranges, humid forests, but also dry and arid deserts. To the east of the country rises the Sierra Nevada Mountains with the famous Yosemite National Park. This national park is one of the most visited places in the USA and we find one of the most beautiful mountain valleys, which was modeled by a glacier. The park covers an area of 3080 km2, located in the middle of California, about 250 km from the metropolis of San Francisco. The National Park at the foot of the Sierra Nevada is a popular area, especially for lovers of mountaineering. These are attracted by huge and challenging rock walls, such as El Capitan or Half Dome. The highest peak is Mt.Lyell on the southeastern boundary of the park, which reaches a height of 3997 meters above sea level. In addition to granite cliffs, there are also around a dozen waterfalls. Other visitors usually visit only Yosemite Valley. The northern parts of the park are even inaccessible in winter. The big attraction of this park are also the huge redwood trees, which are the oldest trees in America and around the world. Some of them are up to 3200 years old. Alpine Meadows
(2080 – 2630 m above sea level)
Above the northern part of Lake Tahoe there are many important ski resorts. One of them is also Alpine Meadows, which is located on the northern and southern slopes of the Ward Peak massif reaching a height of 2633 meters above sea level. It is located near Tahoe City and adjacent to Squaw Valley Ski Area. Compared to its neighbor, however, it is significantly smaller and also not so shiny.
The area is skied on an area of 2000 acres, which is about 800 hectares, where we find about 100 downhill trails of varying difficulty and length. However, you do not have to follow the directly marked slopes, but you can ski freely anywhere in between. The disadvantages of the area are more outdated and slower transport facilities. Skiers are transported by 14 lifts and chair lifts. Also, no ski facilities in the form of a village were built here. There is no accommodation and catering facilities. There is only one snack bar, one restaurant and a self-service cafeteria in the valley. Due to this shortcoming, the vast majority of skiers and snowboarders head to the neighboring resort of Squaw Valley, where there is sufficient infrastructure and quality ski facilities. However, there are people who are attracted to this form of skiing. Alpine Meadows offers skiing in a quiet and undisturbed environment, without the influx of tourists and away from noisy crowds. As a result, endless queues do not form at the cable cars and lifts, and intact snow remains for many days. Alpine Meadows has its pros and cons, it’s up to you.
Sufficient altitude guarantees quality snow cover throughout the season, which lasts from mid-November to June. Even in the summer months, there is a lot of snow, but the lifts stop due to the lack of interest of tourists. On average, 12.5 meters of deep powder are attacked here every year. About a quarter of all tracks, which are oriented in the lower part of the area, are intended for beginners. These green tracks serve slow surface lifts and chair lifts. Snowboarders can enjoy a terrain park with a U-ramp and a Superpipe. Admission to the park costs $ 20. The upper part of the area is intersected by blue and challenging black slopes, including diamond-marked extremely challenging slopes with many natural obstacles. The longest ski slope in the area is 4 km long. The complex is open every day from 9 am to 4 pm. The all-day ski pass costs you $ 56 and is also available in other resorts around Lake Tahoe. The resort also includes ski and snowboard equipment rental, ski service, babysitting and storage room, ski schools and kindergartens.
Quality accommodation is located in Tahoe City, about 10 km away, which lies on the shores of the lake. You can visit one of the nice and quiet restaurants, where they will offer you a lot of delicious food. The atmosphere is complemented by a fire in the fireplace and live jazz music. The most famous hotels include Sunnyside on the shores of the lake or River Ranch, which was strategically built right at the entrance to the valley towards the ski area.
