The US state of Colorado is located in the west of the country on both sides of the Rocky Mountains, where we also find the highest mountain Mount Elbert 4401 meters above sea level. Colorado borders the states of Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska. The massive mountains here are covered with spruce and aspen forests, which, however, suffered considerable damage in 2002 during a huge fire. Restoring forests to their original state will take several decades. You will find snow in the mountains only during the winter months, there are also several glaciers. The Rocky Mountains provide ideal conditions for skiing and resorts like Aspen have become popular tourist centers. Inside the Rockies there are several important national parks, such as the Rocky Mountains, Mount Elbert, Black Canyon or the Garden of the Gods. The Great Ditch Depression also stretches here. Apart from the Rocky Mountains in the west of the country, most of the surface is made up of large prairies, which are a kind of reflection of the Wild West. The Colorado Plateau extends to the southwest, with annual rainfall of about 200 mm.
