The US state of Colorado is located in the west of the country on both sides of the Rocky Mountains, where we also find the highest mountain Mount Elbert 4401 meters above sea level. Colorado borders the states of Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska. The massive mountains here are covered with spruce and aspen forests, which, however, suffered considerable damage in 2002 during a huge fire. Restoring forests to their original state will take several decades. You will find snow in the mountains only during the winter months, there are also several glaciers. The Rocky Mountains provide ideal conditions for skiing and resorts like Aspen have become popular tourist centers. Inside the Rockies there are several important national parks, such as the Rocky Mountains, Mount Elbert, Black Canyon or the Garden of the Gods. The Great Ditch Depression also stretches here. Apart from the Rocky Mountains in the west of the country, most of the surface is made up of large prairies, which are a kind of reflection of the Wild West. The Colorado Plateau extends to the southwest, with annual rainfall of about 200 mm.

Colorado was originally home to many Native American tribes. The inhabitants of the rock walls of Mesa Verde and in the prairies of the Cheyenne and the Arapahs lived here. All these tribes were pushed out by the Spaniards, who subsequently named the area after the reddish rocks. In 1859, a gold rush broke out in Colorado, resulting in a huge wave of immigrants and the development of border towns. In connection with this, there has also been a development in the field of irrigation agriculture, sugar beet growing and cattle and sheep breeding. Thanks to its rich mineral resources, Colorado became an important industrial center at the end of the 19th century. Today, it is sought after by vacationers who like a pleasant summer climate and also skiing on the rich reserves of powder snow. The road to the national park is not complicated. Just fly to Denver, the state’s capital. From Denver, the highway runs north and west, along smaller roads, such as the Thompson River, which meanders in a narrow gorge to Estes Park, the eastern gateway to the park. Estes Park with its 10,000 inhabitants is a relatively well-known ski resort.

Up to 4,000 peaks towering over deep valleys were shaped by a mountain glacier, leaving in some places crystal clear lakes, such as Lake Bear.
